ARTS COUNCIL OF BIG SKY
BIG SKY – Presented by the Arts Council of Big Sky, the fourth annual Big Sky Classical Music Festival is slated for Aug. 8-10. The festival features three nights of world-class music, with two of the nights free to the public.
The first night of the festival features a rare chance to see and hear two incredible musicians on one stage. Angella Ahn and David Wallace, along with pianist Julie Gosswiller, will open the festival with a performance at the Warren Miller Performing Arts Center on Friday, Aug. 8, at 7:30 p.m.
Ahn is the violinist for the Ahn Trio – comprised of Angella and her twin sisters – which was born while all three studied at the Juilliard School of Music in New York City. Ahn is currently an Assistant Professor of Violin and Viola at Montana State University in Bozeman. A Juilliard Professor and a New York Philharmonic Senior Teaching Artist, Dr. Wallace is an internationally touring musician, a Grammy-nominated performer, an award-winning composer and a master teaching artist.
Other events over the weekend include Spectrum Brass on Aug. 9 and the Big Sky Festival Orchestra on Aug. 10. Both concerts are free and will be outdoors in Big Sky’s Town Center Park.
Spectrum’s members are leading freelance musicians who have performed with an impressive collection of orchestras and chamber groups including the American Brass Quintet, Boston Brass, Colorado Symphony, New York Chamber Soloists, and Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble, among others.
Maestro Peter Bay will be conducting the Big Sky Festival Orchestra Sunday evening. Celebrating his 16th full season as Music Director and Conductor of the Austin Symphony Orchestra, Maestro Bay has appeared with 70 different orchestras, as well as holding positions as Music Director of a number of orchestras and festivals around the country. He’s also held four different conducting posts with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra in New York and the Richmond Symphony in Virginia.

We all are familiar with using a limited palette, but do you use one? Do you know how to use a limited palette to create different color combinations? Are you tired of carrying around 15-20 different tubes when you paint plein air? Have you ever wanted to create a certain “mood” in a painting but failed? Do you create a lot of mud? Do you struggle to achieve color harmony? All these problems are addressed in John’s workbook in clear and concise language!
Based on the bestselling “Limited Palatte, Unlimited Color” workbook written by John Pototschnik, the workshop is run by Maggie Shane and Annie McCoy, accomplished landscape (acrylic) and plein air (oil) artists, exhibitors at the Big Sky Artists’ Studio & Gallery and members of the Big Sky Artists Collective.
Each student will receive a copy of “Limited Palette, Unlimited Color” to keep and take home to continue your limited palette journey. We will show you how to use the color wheel and mix your own clean mixtures to successfully create a mood for your paintings.
Each day, we will create a different limited palette color chart and paint a version of a simple landscape using John’s directives. You will then be able to go home and paint more schemes using the book for guidance.
Workshop is open to painters (oil or acrylic) of any level although students must have some basic knowledge of the medium he or she uses. Students will be provided the book ($92 value), color wheel, value scale and canvas papers to complete the daily exercises.
Sundays, April 14, 21 and 28, 2024
Noon until 6PM.
$170.
