BIG SKY – Vacationing families can travel a little lighter now that a new local business, Big Sky Baby Gear, is delivering baby equipment rentals right to their front doors.
Opened in June, the company was started by Big Sky resident Kami Hussey who realized how cumbersome travelling with toddlers and all their gear could be.
“We’ve experienced how much stuff this little human being takes when you go on vacation,” she said. “We wanted to offer a service for families traveling to Big Sky that would make everyone’s vacation more enjoyable by providing the comforts of home for baby, and lightening the load for Mom and Dad.”
The idea was first born during a recent trip to Maui, Hawaii, where Hussey and her husband Justin – owner of Big Sky’s Hussey Plumbing – rented gear for their nineteen month-old son Owen from a similar company. Realizing the service could be valuable in Big Sky, she began setting it up while they were away.
“I felt like this was a good business for me having experience with Hussey Plumbing, but also with having gone through all the [equipment] research myself with having a little baby,” Kami said.
The company focuses on quality, convenience and superior customer service, she said. Strictly an online delivery service, bigskybabygear.com allows parents to pick out products they need, dates they need them, and take care of payment without ever having to pick up the phone.
All products are items they have used for their own son, making them truly “Mom and Dad tested.”
“Safety and cleanliness are of utmost importance to Big Sky Baby Gear, which is why we purchased only brand new, high quality equipment and are continuously watching for any recalls to our equipment,” Kami added.
As a local, Kami knows what the ideal gear is for babies living in a mountain town – gear that many families living in cities, or less rugged areas, may not own. Products range from cribs and pack ‘n’ plays to durable on and off road fitness strollers and the Kelty Journey Child Carriers for hiking.
“It’s truly a stress free way to lighten your load.”

We all are familiar with using a limited palette, but do you use one? Do you know how to use a limited palette to create different color combinations? Are you tired of carrying around 15-20 different tubes when you paint plein air? Have you ever wanted to create a certain “mood” in a painting but failed? Do you create a lot of mud? Do you struggle to achieve color harmony? All these problems are addressed in John’s workbook in clear and concise language!
Based on the bestselling “Limited Palatte, Unlimited Color” workbook written by John Pototschnik, the workshop is run by Maggie Shane and Annie McCoy, accomplished landscape (acrylic) and plein air (oil) artists, exhibitors at the Big Sky Artists’ Studio & Gallery and members of the Big Sky Artists Collective.
Each student will receive a copy of “Limited Palette, Unlimited Color” to keep and take home to continue your limited palette journey. We will show you how to use the color wheel and mix your own clean mixtures to successfully create a mood for your paintings.
Each day, we will create a different limited palette color chart and paint a version of a simple landscape using John’s directives. You will then be able to go home and paint more schemes using the book for guidance.
Workshop is open to painters (oil or acrylic) of any level although students must have some basic knowledge of the medium he or she uses. Students will be provided the book ($92 value), color wheel, value scale and canvas papers to complete the daily exercises.
