BSCC skatepark fundraiser Dec. 6, new trail signage installed, and new winter trails
Skatepark fundraiser set for Dec. 6
BSCC’s Parks Committee is hosting a fundraiser for the second phase of the Big Sky Community Park’s skatepark at Lone Peak Cinema on Dec. 6 from 6-9 p.m. The fundraiser will include a silent auction, an art auction featuring local artists’ work in a variety of mediums, and raffles for a skateboard and four rounds of golf among other items. Skateboard movies will play on the big screen and design renderings of the second phase will be on display for comment.
Winter trails
BSCC is establishing winter walking trails to enhance pedestrian safety and increase connectivity within the Town Center and Meadow Village areas of Big Sky.
Led by BSCC’s Trails Committee and with Lone Mountain Ranch donating time and equipment, the winter trails program is funded by Big Sky Area Resort Tax. Three miles of trails will be plowed or packed including Ousel Falls Trail from Town Center to Spruce Cone Drive; Lone Peak Trail (formerly Spur Road Trail) from Town Center to Roxy’s Market; Crail Ranch Trail from Spanish Peaks Condos to the community park; and Little Willow Way within the Community Park. The trails will be open to hikers, dog walkers and fat bikes.
BSCC installs trail signage
BSCC recently installed 13 new trail signs southeast of Big Sky Town Center on the five miles of Hummocks and Uplands trails that BSCC built this summer. Funding for the project, which includes 64 total parks and trails signs, came from Big Sky Area Resort Tax and the Smith Family Foundation in the amount of $35,000.
BSCC is using the money in a comprehensive effort to rebrand parks and trails signage with a more consistent theme. The remaining signs are being fabricated and will be installed in spring 2015.
The Big Sky Community Corporation promotes, acquires and preserves sustainable recreational resources and programming for the use of the Big Sky community and its visitors.

We all are familiar with using a limited palette, but do you use one? Do you know how to use a limited palette to create different color combinations? Are you tired of carrying around 15-20 different tubes when you paint plein air? Have you ever wanted to create a certain “mood” in a painting but failed? Do you create a lot of mud? Do you struggle to achieve color harmony? All these problems are addressed in John’s workbook in clear and concise language!
Based on the bestselling “Limited Palatte, Unlimited Color” workbook written by John Pototschnik, the workshop is run by Maggie Shane and Annie McCoy, accomplished landscape (acrylic) and plein air (oil) artists, exhibitors at the Big Sky Artists’ Studio & Gallery and members of the Big Sky Artists Collective.
Each student will receive a copy of “Limited Palette, Unlimited Color” to keep and take home to continue your limited palette journey. We will show you how to use the color wheel and mix your own clean mixtures to successfully create a mood for your paintings.
Each day, we will create a different limited palette color chart and paint a version of a simple landscape using John’s directives. You will then be able to go home and paint more schemes using the book for guidance.
Workshop is open to painters (oil or acrylic) of any level although students must have some basic knowledge of the medium he or she uses. Students will be provided the book ($92 value), color wheel, value scale and canvas papers to complete the daily exercises.
