BIG SKY – The Kids Adventure Games are coming to Big Sky Resort Aug. 22-23 for children age 6-14. Teams of two will navigate their way through wild terrain to find predetermined checkpoints that will complete their journey.
Part of a seven-resort tour, the games are an opportunity for kids to experience the thrill of adventure racing, learn teamwork skills, have fun and build confidence in a one-of-a-kind outdoor experience created just for them. They will need to work together to complete a variety of sports and problem-solving challenges.
“The idea behind the race is to create an event that has all the fun things we dreamed about as kids,” said race director Billy Mattison. “With zip lines, slip and slides, rope bridges, tubing, mud crawls and anything else we can dream up, the kids will have a true adventure and an incredible time.
“We want the kids to cross the finish line pumped up with smiles on their faces and a feeling of accomplishment,” he said.
Friday, Aug. 22 is check-in day for the teams with an optional skills clinic where participants will rotate between biking, climbing, and Teamwork and Adventure Racing 101.
Race day is Saturday, Aug. 23 starting at 9 a.m., with an afterparty and awards ceremony at 6 p.m.
The Kids Adventure Games is a way to challenge participants and teams physically and mentally while exploring and experiencing a mini-expedition. This summer the games stopped in Snowbird, Utah; Mammoth and Squaw Valley, Calif.; Vail, Colo; and The Trapp Family Lodge in Stowe, Vt. The final stop on the tour will be Sun Valley, Idaho Aug. 30-31.
Space is limited and pre-registration is required for the Big Sky event. Lodging discounts are available through Big Sky Resort’s central reservations.

We all are familiar with using a limited palette, but do you use one? Do you know how to use a limited palette to create different color combinations? Are you tired of carrying around 15-20 different tubes when you paint plein air? Have you ever wanted to create a certain “mood” in a painting but failed? Do you create a lot of mud? Do you struggle to achieve color harmony? All these problems are addressed in John’s workbook in clear and concise language!
Based on the bestselling “Limited Palatte, Unlimited Color” workbook written by John Pototschnik, the workshop is run by Maggie Shane and Annie McCoy, accomplished landscape (acrylic) and plein air (oil) artists, exhibitors at the Big Sky Artists’ Studio & Gallery and members of the Big Sky Artists Collective.
Each student will receive a copy of “Limited Palette, Unlimited Color” to keep and take home to continue your limited palette journey. We will show you how to use the color wheel and mix your own clean mixtures to successfully create a mood for your paintings.
Each day, we will create a different limited palette color chart and paint a version of a simple landscape using John’s directives. You will then be able to go home and paint more schemes using the book for guidance.
Workshop is open to painters (oil or acrylic) of any level although students must have some basic knowledge of the medium he or she uses. Students will be provided the book ($92 value), color wheel, value scale and canvas papers to complete the daily exercises.
