Mark Bruckner Farms near Malta will describe methods for using nitrogen-fixing plants to boost production of rye, wheat and other dry land crops during a June 17 field tour sponsored by the Montana Organic Association.

Bruckner farms 3,400 dry land acres of mostly cereal grains using inter-seeding and other techniques to manage fertility and weeds. The farm has been certified organic since 1999.

More information on the field tour is available on the Montana Department of Agriculture’s Organic Program website: agr.mt.gov/organic/2011FarmTour.pdf. A $10 fee includes lunch. Directions to the farm are included on the flyer. To preregister, contact Sam Schmidt of the association at 771-9229.

Malta is on the High Plains, north of the Little Rocky Mountains, in North-central Montana. It is the county seat of Phillips County, and is near the Missouri River.
