The Dirtbag Ball is a fundraiser for Big Sky Resort’s ski patrol, and is one of the area’s most historic events. The tradition started in the spring of 1979 at Buck’s T4, and the patrol used the money to buy rescue equipment, gear for the patrol shacks, and to pay for a year-end celebration.
During the day’s events, locals dress up in wacky outfits and take part in a parade, a ceremony honoring past dirtbag royalty, and then a powder 8’s contest on Dobe’s and Krons under the tram. A viewing area is easily accessed by walking a short distance above the Triple chairlift.
At the evening event, which this year will be held at the Cinnamon Lodge, patrol crowns a new King and Queen of the Dirtbags. These are locals who ski hard every day and party hard at night.
This event attracts locals and tourists alike.
