On Nov. 11, at 9:30 a.m. at the Big Sky Chapel, All Saints in Big Sky will host its annual service honoring those who have served in all branches of armed forces in the U.S. or abroad.
Service men and women are asked to arrive at the chapel at 9 a.m. to participate in the procession of the flags. Uniforms or decor are encouraged.
Vice Admiral (retired) Rodney P. Rempt and Technical Sargeant (retired) Jack Crowther, both members of All Saints, will deliver a dialogue on service to others.
Rempt (at left) is a Vietnam veteran who retired after 41 years of active duty in the Navy in 2007. During his time at sea, he commanded three different ships from a missile boat to a cruiser. He also worked for many years on weapons systems development including the Navy’s current defense against ballistic missiles. More recently he served as President of the Naval War College in Newport, R.I., and then as Superintendent of the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.
Crowther (at right) enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corp, January of 1943, served in the Pacific Theatre from March of 1944 to September 1945, the Marshall Islands from March 1944 to March 1945 and on Okinawa from March 1945 to September 1945. He was honorably discharged in December 1945.
Again this year, the service will conclude with Taps, played by John DeChaine. He will use the bugle that his father, H. J. “Chick” DeChaine, played during World War II as a regimental bugler in the infantry. Chick DeChaine served under General Patton and landed with his bugle at Normandy during the D-Day invasion. John is the owner of Complete Painting and lives in Bozeman with his wife Char.
A reception with refreshments will follow the service.
