Yellowstone fishing restrictions lifted

Cooler water temperatures will allow Yellowstone National Park officials to lift mandatory fishing restrictions from the Firehole, Gibbon, and Madison rivers effective Friday, Aug. 31.

Mandatory fishing restrictions have been in place on these rivers since Aug. 1, when unusually high air temperatures resulted in high afternoon water temperatures of 70 – 80 degrees. Water temperatures this high can be stressful and even fatal for trout. Angler cooperation with fishing restrictions has helped protect the park fisheries. All other waters are open in accordance with the fishing regulations.

A Yellowstone National Park Fishing Permit is required to fish in the park and are available at all ranger stations, visitor centers, Yellowstone Park General Stores, and at many businesses in the Greater Yellowstone area.

Yellowstone fishing information and regulations may also be found at nps.gov/yell/planyourvisit/fishdates.htm.
