On Mar. 7, Montana Free Press will hold a behind-the-scenes look at reporting on Montana’s foster care system. In their recent work, editor Brad Tyer and health and human services reporter Mara Silvers completed a data project called “Keeping the Kids.”

The three-part series told the story of a racially skewed foster care caseload in Montana—Native American children are represented at a higher rate than others.

“The conversation will explore original data analysis about the factors driving youth into the foster care system, preventative maternal health programs around the state, and a specialized Indian Child Welfare Act court in Billings working to reunify Native families after foster care,” MTFP stated on its website.

There will be a segment for questions about reporting on this project.
