A child was attacked and injured by a subadult female black bear on Sunday night, Aug. 11, around 10 p.m. at a private campground south of Red Lodge.

The child was inside a tent when the bear attacked. Afterwards they were transported to Billings for medical treatment.

Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks game wardens responded Sunday night and set a trap at the campsite, where they found unsecured attractants including garbage, a cooler and human food around and inside the tent. The bear was caught on Monday afternoon and euthanized—shot and killed by officials, according to an Aug. 13 FWP press release.

“The black bear involved in the incident had no history of conflicts,” the release stated. “However, the bear had likely become food-conditioned and human-habituated after accessing unsecured attractants in the area. Evidence at the site matched the physical characteristics of the bear and FWP believes the bear killed was the bear involved in the attack.”

The Red Lodge Police Department, Wyoming Game & Fish Department and the Carbon County Sheriff’s Office assisted FWP’s response to Sunday’s incident.
