Gallatin County Sheriff and U.S Forest Service smokejumpers responded to a fire on Aug. 21 after smoke was spotted on Flathead Pass in the northern Bridger Range. They determined the fire was caused by a group of campers. Due to peak fire season conditions, the campers were charged with disorderly conduct for the “hazardous act” according to an Aug. 21 press release from the sheriff’s office.

“Please note that should a campfire become uncontrolled, the persons who started the fire will be held criminally and financially responsible for said fire,” stated the release, and reminded readers that the Bridger Foothills fire of 2020 cost approximately $10 million to extinguish.
