On Thursday, April 3, local films will hit The Waypoint screens for the 10th Annual Big Sky Winter Shootout. The film and photography festival, presented by Second Season, is a celebration of Big Sky’s community and culture through documentation of Big Sky’s winter season—whether that be films featuring snowy adventures or family stories.

“It pays tribute to our local customs and traditions, gives voice to social issues, showcases the work and talents of the many creatives that call this place home, and does it all with a smile, a tear and a laugh,” a March 19 release stated. The festival will feature locally shot films and photos from this ongoing winter, and live music by Brian J. Stumpf. This year, audiences can vote for the People’s Choice Awards online between April 4 and 29, honoring the most popular projects of the year.

After the event, which will have three show times at 5, 6:30 and 8 p.m., The Waypoint will turn into a Big Sky Prom-themed dance party at 9:15 p.m. The afterparty is free and DJs Take a Chance & Nat Jio will keep the tunes going.

“The Shootout is near and dear to my heart,” stated Chance Lenay, otherwise known as DJ Take a Chance, in the release. Lenay isn’t new to the shootout scene. In 2018, he won the People’s Choice Award for “best film” at the Big Sky Shootout for his film “Snow Dreams” with Skylab Media House.

“I’ve always wanted to do a Big Sky Prom-themed show and the stars finally aligned with this year’s anniversary. It’s the perfect pairing to celebrate our core community, culture and traditions.”

Tickets to the Big Sky Shootout are $25 and can be purchased online. To prepare for the 10th anniversary, The Waypoint will host a free showing of a Shootout retro re-runs on Tuesday, March 25.

“We are pulling out all the stops for the 10-year anniversary celebration,” stated Erik Morrison, CEO of Second Season and producer of the Shootout.
