The City of Bozeman is pursuing the purchase of the Federal Building through the National Park Service’s Historic Surplus Property Program, following the General Services Administration’s July 24 announcement that it will dispose of the building. The Federal Building is located along Babcock Avenue between South Black and South Tracy Avenues and is home to the only downtown post office as well as the offices of many federal employees.
NPS’ property program allows local governments to obtain and preserve historic federal buildings at no cost. The city has long eyed the building as a potential site to consolidate three separate city buildings under one roof.
“If the city can acquire the building through this program, residents would have greater ease of access to multiple city services, the building would be retained as a historic building, and we could keep the post office as a tenant,” the city said in a July 24 statement.
“Bozeman residents have grown up around the Federal Building, and it has been a key feature of our downtown,” the statement continued. “We hope to keep it that way for our future generations.”
