Through ten vividly distinct movements\, Mussorgsky paints musical portraits of scenes ranging from playful baby chicks and a menacing fairytale witch to the solemnity of catacombs and the grandeur of the Great Gate of Kiev. The piece is most famously known in its orchestral form\, arranged by Ravel in 1922\, which highlights its dramatic color and sweeping intensity. \nAdding to the program\, the Symphony’s former Principal Percussionist\, Dana Dominguez\, takes center stage as the featured soloist in Grammy Award-winning composer Puts’ Marimba Concerto. Showcasing both the lyrical and rhythmic capabilities of the marimba\, this concerto highlights Dominguez’s technical mastery and expressive musicianship.
