BOZEMAN – Members of a transportation technology transfer project with the Western Transportation Institute received an award this fall for their work planning, coordinating, implementing and facilitating the annual Western States Rural Transportation Technology Implementers Forum.

The forum, set for June 18-20, 2013, is geared for field engineers, maintenance personnel and technicians working on implementing intelligent transportation systems in rural areas.

At the recent National Rural Intelligent Transportation Systems conference, the Western States Forum was recognized with a Best of Rural ITS award for Best New Innovative Product, Service or Application.
The Western States Rural Transportation Technology Implementers Forum is sponsored by WTI and the California Department of Transportation through the Western States Rural Transportation Consortium, a partnership between California, Oregon, Nevada and Washington departments of transportation.
Presenters at the forum go into detail about ITS deployments. Speakers discuss success stories, as well as problems, so participants get a good idea of what does and doesn’t work and why.
Part of Montana State University, WTI offers support to ITS implementers working in challenging rural environments, and also pursues research that furthers the understanding of transportation issues, particularly in the rural West. WTI is the country’s largest National University Transportation Center focused on rural transportation issues.
