Gen. Wesley Clark to speak March 5 at MSU

BOZEMAN – Retired Gen. Wesley K. Clark, one of the nation’s most highly decorated military officers, will speak at Montana State University at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, March 5, in the Strand Union Building Ballrooms.

Clark, who retired as a four star general, served as the supreme allied commander and commander-in-chief, U.S. European command, from the summer of 1997 until summer 2000.

Clark graduated first in his class from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1966 and was awarded a Rhodes Scholarship. He holds a master’s degree in philosophy, politics and economics from the University of Oxford. He also received a master’s in military science from the U.S. Command and General Staff College.

Clark was wounded while serving in Vietnam and received the Silver Star for his actions. He was director of Strategic Plans and Policy on the Joint Chiefs of Staff during the Bosnia and Herzegovina conflict. He was appointed to Supreme Allied Commander Europe by President Bill Clinton, serving during the Kosovo War.

After retiring from the U.S. military in 2000, Clark has been involved in national policy. He was a Democratic candidate for president in 2004. He has chaired several public and private companies, is a leader in pursuing energy solutions, and also serves in a number of leadership roles of non-profit public service organizations.

Among his awards and honors are the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the State Department’s Distinguished Service Award, five Defense Distinguished Service Medals, the Silver Star and the Purple Heart. Clark has received honorary knighthoods from the British and Dutch governments, and numerous other awards from foreign governments, including award of Commander of the Legion of Honor (France).

Clark is the author of three bestselling books: Waging Modern War, Winning Modern Wars, and A Time to Lead. He appears frequently on TV and radio as a commentator on military events, speaking about diplomacy, leadership and technology.
