A new online course from Montana State University gives healthcare professionals and students in pre-health programs a foundation for working and conversing with Spanish-speaking patients.

The course is designed for students who have little or no previous Spanish language training, but will also aid more advanced Spanish learners with a targeted focus on conversation used in healthcare settings.

The course, SPNS 291-50, begins Sept. 6 and is offered completely online. Students do not need to be enrolled in an MSU program of study, and off-campus professionals are encouraged to register. The course offers three undergraduate credits in Spanish.

Students will apply specifically targeted sets of Spanish vocabulary/grammar to medical conversation; practice conducting medical interviews in Spanish; and engage with guest-speaking Latino/non-Latino medical professionals. The course also helps students develop cultural competency of Latino medical issues in and outside the U.S., and establishes a foundation for further study of the Spanish language and Latino culture.
