BOZEMAN — Montana State University will host a Juneteenth event in celebration of the federal holiday, which commemorates the emancipation of enslaved people in the U.S. The celebration is free and open to the public.
Attendees can enjoy food, music and raffle prizes from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday, June 19, in the Strand Union Building, Room 185. The event will also include stations for creating storytelling quilt squares, reading Juneteenth-related books and solving word puzzles, and planting red cosmos, which symbolize growth and liberation.
The event is an opportunity to honor community, culture and history, said Student Commons director Sophia Bielsky. The Student Commons, Access and Success and the MSU Library will host the celebration.

The Student Commons and MSU Black Student Union are also collaborating with Tinworks Art, Cultured Roots and Studio Wheelhouse in an off-campus Juneteenth celebration featuring live music, food, community resources and storytelling. It will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. June 19 at 719 N. Ida Ave. in Bozeman.
Prior to the event, MSU students can pick up free meal vouchers in the SUB, Room 185, after showing their CatCard. The 50 available vouchers are first come, first served.
