The Grotto Falls Trail in Hyalite Canyon has been inducted into the Old-Growth Forest Network’s Community Forest Program, making it the second such recognized site in Montana and one of nearly 350 nationwide, according to a blog post by the canyon’s partner nonprofit, Friends of Hyalite.
The trail, located in the Custer Gallatin National Forest and popular to both locals and visitors, was recognized for its old-growth subalpine forest featuring cascading waterfalls, towering spruce and firs, and rich biodiversity including elk, moose, bears and mountain goats. Hyalite Canyon also supplies roughly 80% of Bozeman’s municipal water.
A public celebration is scheduled for Tuesday, June 23 from 4-5 p.m. at the Grotto Falls trailhead, followed by a guided nature hike from 5-7:30 p.m. For more information, or to register for the event, contact Friends of Hyalite at info@hyalite.org.
