On Saturday, July 11, at approximately 1:20 a.m., a Bozeman Police officer on patrol in the downtown area was approached by a group who reported a stabbing had just occurred in the 200 block of East Main Street. According to details from a City of Bozeman press release, bystanders walked the stabbing victim to the officer where immediate medical care was provided until emergency medical responders arrived.
Additional officers responded and contacted staff with the business where the stabbing occurred. Staff provided video surveillance footage that captured a physical disturbance inside the business just before the victim was stabbed.
A suspect description was obtained from the surveillance footage and at approximately 1:26 a.m., officers located and took the suspect into custody after a witness alerted them that he was attempting to leave the area.
The suspect is currently being held at the Gallatin County Detention Center without bond for the crimes of assault with a weapon and criminal endangerment, both felonies, and are scheduled to appear in Gallatin County Justice Court on Monday, July 13.
The stabbing victim received medical care and has since been released from the hospital. At this time, there is no indication that there are additional victims of the stabbing or a danger to the public.
“We would like to express our appreciation to the Bozeman Fire Department, American Medical Response, the Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office and the Montana State University Police Department for their valuable assistance during this investigation,” Bozeman Police Chief Jim Veltkamp stated in the press release.
