Acoustic trio defies genres

BOZEMAN – The Devil Makes Three is bringing big sound for a sold out show to the Emerson Cultural Center on Thursday, Jan. 23.

The group is on tour promoting their fourth studio album, “I’m A Stranger Here,” which was released in late October. Frontman Pete Bernhard described the recording as being dark thematically, lyrically and sonically, according to their website. Perhaps that’s why it’s so addicting.

Singer/guitarist Bernhard, guitarist/banjoist Cooper McBean and stand up bassist Lucia Turino comprise the booming trio. Until you see them live, it’s hard to believe just three people make up this Vermont-based band.

You can hear Americana icon Buddy Miller and Black Keys guitarist Dan Auerbach’s influences on “I’m a Stranger Here.” Miller produced the new album and Auerbach lent his studio, Easy Eye Sound in Nashville, to record the tracks. Throughout the record, one can hear a fusing of Auerbach’s gritty rock and blues sound with Miller’s softer country pickin’. The 10-track recording is short but sweetly addicting, beckoning its listeners to come out and hear the real deal.

And there’s no doubt music fans should watch The Devil Makes Three live. Having seen them this past fall at the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park, it’s clear they feed off the crowd’s energy and they throw it right back with a mighty rhythm and howling vocals that send a dancing fervor through the crowd.

It’s bluegrass rockabilly with a punkish edge, bringing fans of rock, folk, blues and country to a refreshing common ground.
