From now until March 21, Gallatin County will accept applications to its Open Lands Program for grants up to $100,000 per project.
The program funds land acquisition, capital improvement and maintenance projects that support recreation, protect water quality in streams and rivers, manage growth or preserve wild areas, according to a Jan. 28 Gallatin County press release.
“Projects should provide clear public benefits, such as enhanced public access or other tangible community advantages,” the release stated. Recent grant recipients include the Huntley-Kern Pond Project in Big Sky, river access improvements along the Gallatin River, and the construction of an operations building for the Rendezvous Trail System in West Yellowstone. Applicants must be public agencies, nonprofits or property owners’ associations.
The voter-approved Open Space levy is expected to generate over $4.36 million this year, according to the release, with roughly $1.09 million available for these “other eligible projects,” granted to applicants by the Gallatin County Open Lands Board. The remaining $3-plus million will support conservation projects like conservation easements for private landowners.
