Authorities investigate gun threat, fatal officer-involved shooting in Philipsburg

On Sunday afternoon, Feb. 8, an armed suspect threatened patrons at the Sunshine Station in Philipsburg, eventually resulting in the suspect’s death.  

The Montana Division of Criminal Investigation is investigating the incident which took place at approximately 4 p.m., when the suspect—who has not yet been identified publicly—threatened the bar’s patrons with a gun, before leaving the bar. The suspect was located by deputies, and led the officers on a “short pursuit” which came to a stop on Montana Highway 1, according to a DCI press release.

The suspect pointed his gun at an officer, and “in response, the officer discharged his duty weapon at the suspect and killed him,” the release stated.  

No officers were injured, and the officer who discharged his weapon has been placed on administrative leave according to protocol for the ongoing investigation.
