Avalanche danger ‘High’ in southwest Montana ranges

EBS STAFF

The Gallatin National Forest Avalanche Center has issued “high” avalanche warnings for the Bridger, northern Gallatin and northern Madison ranges. The southern Madison, southern Gallatin and Island Park areas have been rated “considerable” danger.

Over the last two days, there have been 19 avalanches reported in the backcountry, including Hyalite, Buck Ridge, Beehive Basin and Saddle Peak in the Bridgers, according to the GNFAC’s Dec. 9 report, and more activity is likely.

“At a minimum, you’ll trigger freshly formed wind slabs,” the report stated. “The best option is to avoid avalanche terrain and seek out slopes sheltered from the wind less than 30 degrees in steepness and not underneath anything steeper.”

GNFAC recommends checking the daily avalanche forecast before heading into the backcountry.
