After a dry and exceptionally warm winter, much community chatter concerns the potential for a difficult wildfire season.

On Wednesday afternoon, April 8 at The Wilson Hotel, the Big Sky Fire Department will join Big Sky Sustainability Network Organization (SNO) for its third annual Owners Association Sustainability Workshop, and this year’s topic is wildfire resilience for the wildland-urban interface.

“Wildfire does not know property boundaries. SNO knows it is crucial to work together across the community to create long-term wildfire resilience,” Lizzie Peyton, director of Big Sky SNO, stated in a press release. “This workshop is designed to move beyond awareness and give participants the tools they need to identify risk, communicate mitigation strategies, and take action within their neighborhoods.”

Property managers, HOA leaders , realtors, landscapers and property owners—as well as any other interested community members—are invited to the event, which will run from 12:45 to 4 p.m. followed by a networking reception from 4 to 5 p.m. with a drink included. Tickets to the event are $15 and available online.

The release noted that wildfire risk continues to increase across the West and this winter’s conditions underscore the importance of prioritizing proactive mitigation efforts to protect homes, infrastructure and property values. The workshop aims to help local professionals and homeowners gain a better understanding of risks, preventative strategies, wildfire behavior, and the relationship between mitigation efforts and property insurance.

Staff from BSFD, as well as Alpenscapes partners and neighborhood ambassadors, will lead the hands-on session. It is certified as continuing education credits through the Montana Association of Realtors, according to the release.
