The Bozeman Police Department issued a statement on Jan. 30 affirming they do not have a 287(g) agreement with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and are not involved in civil immigration enforcement.
“The BPD is not involved in civil immigration enforcement,” the statement, posted on the department’s social media pages, said. “We will not assist or participate in civil immigration enforcement, nor will BPD take extra steps to determine an individual’s immigration status.”
According to the department, they will continue to work with local, state and federal law enforcement partners on investigations involving serious crimes such as drug trafficking and child exploitation, enforcing city and state laws based solely on the facts of criminal investigations, and treat individuals equally.
“When our officers respond they will be in uniform, unmasked and their name and badge clearly visible,” the statement said.
Officials also encouraged residents to contact 911 if they encounter individuals claiming to be law enforcement who are not clearly identifiable.“We recognize this current period of instability and heightened tension places significant strain on the public and underscores the need for open communication, professionalism, and respect for constitutional principles,” the statement concluded. “In times of uncertainty, we encourage everyone to come together as a community and look out for one another. Thank you to our residents for continuing to gather peacefully and letting your voices be heard. If you have questions or concerns about this or any issue, please feel free to reach out to us.”
