The Markley Bridge, well-known by locals as “Green Bridge,” over the Gallatin River in Gallatin Canyon will be replaced this year. Construction is expected to begin in winter or early spring 2026 and continue into summer, the Bozeman Ranger District announced in a Jan. 28 news release.
The bridge is a key access point to the Deer Creek Trailhead north of Big Sky and a popular gathering place for summer river-dippers, bridge-jumpers and anglers.

Green Bridge improvements include widening it to a two-lane structure for safety, while preserving its historic trestle design. Traffic impacts and possible temporary closures of the Deer Creek Trailhead and river access are expected during construction, with coordination by the U.S. Forest Service, Montana Department of Transportation, and Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks. The project is funded by the Great American Outdoors Act to address deferred maintenance on public lands. Community members are encouraged to contact the ranger district at 406-522-2520 with questions on the project.
“We acknowledge the importance of the Green Bridge to the public and the Big Sky community,” Bozeman District Ranger Jon Gellings stated in the news release. “While we understand that this project will temporarily limit access to a beloved location, the long-term benefits of a new and safer bridge will ensure continued enjoyment for years to come.”
