Carbella recreation site restricted to hard-sided campers due to grizzly activity

The Bureau of Land Management has banned tent and soft-sided camping at the Carbella Recreation Site effective June 2 through the end of the year, citing frequent grizzly bear activity in the area. Carbella is a popular camping and recreation site for those floating the Yellowstone River through Paradise Valley.

During this time, tents, soft-sided pop-up campers, and canvas-sided sleeping vehicles are prohibited. Violators may face fines or up to 12 months imprisonment. The decision was coordinated in partnership with Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks.

“Restricting camping to hard-sided units reduces the risk of human-bear conflicts, up to and including human and bear mortality, and enhances visitor safety,” stated a news release from the BLM Western Montana District Office. The release encouraged those with further questions to contact the BLM Butte Field Office at BLM_MT_Butte_FO@blm.gov.
