Fire crews on the Custer Gallatin National Forest responded to three wildfire starts and one abandoned campfire over the past week, according to an update on the Custer Gallatin National Forest’s social media page. Quick response held all three fires to a tenth of an acre and each is now 100% contained.
The starts come as hot, dry summer conditions continue to elevate wildfire risk across southwest Montana. As weather continues to warm this week, visitors are encouraged to check current fire restriction status before heading out, as conditions can change quickly and stages can escalate from limiting campfires to banning them outright, including in metal fire rings.
The Forest Service reminds visitors to practice responsible campfire safety: fully extinguish all fires until they are cold to the touch, never leave a fire unattended and stay informed on current forest conditions.
Current fire restrictions and forest conditions can be found at fs.usda.gov/custergallatin.
