Due to warm water temperatures exceeding 68F and low river flows, select Yellowstone National Park rivers will close to fishing in order to protect the park’s native and wild trout fisheries and remain in effect until conditions improve, according to a July 11 press release from the National Park Service.
Beginning Saturday, July 12, the following waterways within Yellowstone National Park are closed to fishing: Madison River and all associated tributaries, the Firehole River and all associated tributaries, the Gibbon River and all associated tributaries downstream of Norris Campground.
Park staff will monitor rivers and streams for warm temperatures and low flows, as well as weather forecasts; the extended forecast calls for continued hot and dry conditions with a slight chance of isolated afternoon thunderstorms, which contribute to continued low stream flows and warm-water temperatures.
Anglers may still fish Yellowstone Lake and other lakes as specified in the park’s Fishing Regulations 2025 booklet and are encouraged to fish during the coolest parts of the day and to land fish quickly.
