Lone Peak High School’s fall sports season began Saturday, Aug. 30, with home soccer games and football games on the road at Manhattan Christian School.
The Big Horns and Ophir Middle School Miners got off the bus ready to play, cruising to a pair of shutout victories to get the season going. The Big Horns won 46-0, and the Miners won 20-0.
“We were well prepared, we were ready for the game… We had our game plan, we executed on everything we needed to execute on,” Lone Peak assistant coach Jeff Helms told EBS in a phone call Tuesday.
He credited all his seniors, including four-year standout Ebe Grabow for a pick-six touchdown, Jed Clack with a score of his own, and Will Helms, Matthew Tompkins, Aeneas Espinosa and Eli Gale.
“Pretty exceptional plays all around,” coach Helms said, adding that the 2025 team has a better balance of all four class years. He highlighted freshman Jens Biggerstaff for making an impact in his high school debut after leading a fearsome Miners squad last year.
Similar to last season, when Helms, Grabow and Gale would rotate into the quarterback position, the Big Horn offense will take it week-by-week with a flexible quarterback arrangement.
Coach Helms is proud to see strong involvement at the middle school level, with a few first-time football players joining the Miners.
Both teams look forward to another road matchup against rival Ennis on Friday. The Mustangs began their season with a bye week and will be fresh as they host the Big Horns.
