On Sunday, Aug. 3, the U.S. Forest Service closed the first two miles of Storm Castle Road in the Gallatin Canyon to remove debris from multiple mudslides in the area. As of 3:30 p.m., the area is reopened for travel, though the Forest Service advises visitors to be mindful of weather events during outdoor adventures.
“Forest users are encouraged to always be prepared for inclement and changing weather conditions when traveling National Forest System roads,” an Aug. 4 Custer Gallatin National Forest Facebook post stated.
Heavy rains caused multiple slides this last week in the Custer Gallatin National Forest, including a July 29 slide on the Truman Gulch Trail in the Bridger Range between mile posts 1.6 and 1.8. The area between the mile posts was closed due to the rainfall. Custer Gallatin National Forest shared the news in an Aug. 1 Facebook post.
“Forest users are advised to exercise caution if choosing to recreate in this area due to unstable terrain and the potential for further erosion,” the post stated. “Recreationists should be prepared for challenging conditions and the possibility of turning back if necessary.”
The post shared that extensive damage due to rains is still being assessed.
