Gallatin County has seen two additional measles cases after an initial outbreak of five cases in mid-April, followed by three household-transmitted cases.
The Gallatin City-County Health Department confirmed the two additional “community acquired” cases in a May 29 press release, noting that the first case, confirmed on May 23, involves an adult who was hospitalized with appropriate precautions and isolation, and has since been released. The second adult case was confirmed on May 28. The vaccination status of the first individual is unknown, and the second individual was fully vaccinated.
“Following a thorough investigation, the health department has not yet identified the exact source of exposure for these cases,” the release stated. “However, based on the timing of symptom onset, it appears likely that both individuals were exposed around the same time. GCCHD continues to actively investigate the initial source of exposure.”
The department encourages community members to visit its measles webpage for resources including reported cases, locations where exposure or transmission may have occurred, and other updates for the public’s benefit.
“With summer approaching and families preparing to travel—whether within Gallatin County or to destinations elsewhere—measles remains a concern for our community,” Lori Christenson, Gallatin City-County health officer, stated in the release. “We encourage everyone to take proactive steps by consulting their health care provider about the MMR vaccine, which provides strong protection against measles. Making informed decisions about vaccination is essential to keeping our families and communities healthy.”
The release noted that Gallatin County’s routine MMR vaccination schedule is still in place, and that vaccination is 97% effective against preventing the spread of measles. Those without prior immunity to measles have a 90% chance of contracting the disease if exposed.
The GCCHD offers MMR vaccinations and encourages residents in need of the vaccine to contact their health care provider or local pharmacy. Residents can call 406-582-3100, or visit GCCHD’s website, for more information or to schedule an appointment.
