Gallatin County warns of isolated flooding due to rapid snowmelt

EBS STAFF

On Tuesday evening and Wednesday, a spring storm brought heavy snow across Gallatin County. Warm weather is moving into the region on Thursday and Friday,  which will result in rapid melting of the new snow, especially at lower elevations.

A May 8 Gallatin County Emergency Management press release warned, “Widespread flooding is not expected, but we are likely to [see] isolated areas with water causing issues.” Rain is also possible, and could add to the flow of water.

Problems can usually occur when streams are blocked.

“Property owners are encouraged to ensure ditches and culverts are clear of debris. Please check your property and monitor it while the snow melts so issues can be addressed when they start. Our goal with spring snow events is to keep the water flowing when it melts,” the release stated.

An informational video was provided, stressing the importance of keeping the water flowing.
