Two lightning-ignited fires are burning south of Orvando, Montana, as crews work to contain them amid returning dry, hot weather this week. The Garnet Fire is twelve miles southwest of Ovando, is around 124 acres in size and 0% contained; the Green Mountain Fire is six miles south of Ovando, 18 acres in size and 20% contained, as of July 16.
The fires were discovered July 9 and are contained to mostly remote and rugged terrain. Currently, there are 226 personnel, four helicopters, five engines, one skidgine, one dozer and two tenders in action as a part of fire suppression efforts.
While no evacuations have been issued at this time, road closures are in place due to fire suppression activities on the Garnet Fire, including Keno Creek Road 0405, Kennedy Creek Road 2817 and Elevation Mountain Fire Road 2819. Locals are asked to keep an eye on the fires’ InciWeb page for updates.
