Grand Targhee Resort, Teton Valley’s ski hill along the west slope of the Teton Range, announced on its website Nov. 19, that the ski area’s opening will be delayed “until further notice” due to unfavorable conditions. The resort was initially set to open Nov. 21.
“Targhee’s motto used to be ‘snow from heaven, not hoses.’ We retired that tagline after we installed a few snow guns, but we are still largely reliant on Mother Nature to open up the resort,” an email from the resort stated. “We are going to delay the opening until it is cold enough to blow snow or we get enough precipitation to open up the resort safely.”
OpenSnow forecaster Alan Smith told Grand Targhee that November has been “unseasonably warm with temperatures running 8 to 10F above average through the first 16 days of the month.” And while temperatures are expected to dip, the forecast continues to lack any significant snow.
“For the end of November and into early December, long range model projections look more conducive to snow which is good news,” Smith said.
Big Sky Resort remains on schedule to open Wednesday, Nov. 26.
