The first known grizzly death of the year—according to FWP records—occurred on Friday, April 11 when a man shed hunting near Dupuyer in north-central Montana shot and killed a grizzly bear.
The adult female bear was 13 years old, weighed about 250 pounds and had no history of conflicts, according to an April 14 FWP press release.
The man was searching for shed antlers on a hillside when he first saw a bear, the release stated. As he was leaving the area, the bear charged him at a short distance. He shot and killed the bear and was uninjured in the conflict. FWP reminded the public to be bear aware as the season warms and bears leave their dens. The release recommended carrying bear spray, traveling in groups and making casual noise, staying away from animal carcasses, storing food properly and keeping garbage, pet food and bird feeders away in a secure building.
