Gallatin County Emergency Management issues winter storm warning for Tuesday evening and winter storm watch for Wednesday evening

Drivers should be on alert for winter weather conditions from Tuesday, Oct. 24 to Thursday, Oct. 26. A snowstorm is predicted to dump between four to13 inches of the white stuff across central and southwest Montana.

Gallatin County residents may have seen alerts from Gallatin County Emergency Management about the weather event that included a winter storm warning and watch.

Winter Storm Warning: Winter Storm Warnings are issued for a significant winter weather event including snow, ice, sleet or blowing snow or a combination of all. 

A winter storm warning has been issued from Tuesday at 6 p.m. until Wednesday at 6 p.m. for central, north central and southwest Montana. During this time, heavy snow is expected, with accumulation totals between four and 13 inches, and winds as high as 35 mph. 

Winter Storm Watch: A Winter Storm Watch is issued 24-hours in advance of a storm indicating that the risk of a hazardous winter weather has reached at least a 50% probability. 

A winter storm watch has been issued for Wednesday night through late Thursday night for central, north central and southwest Montana, affecting most major passes. Heavy snow is possible with total snow accumulations between 2 and 10 inches possible Thursday into Friday. 

Be prepared

Hazardous conditions could impact Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning commutes. GCEM emphasized that if travel is necessary, to pack snow chains, a flashlight, extra food and water in their vehicle. Expect delays and hazardous road conditions.
