High Heels and Handcuffs: Community theater presents ‘Doublewide, Texas’ Nov. 5-6

By Ashley Dodd GUEST COLUMNIST

As the shoulder season descends upon us and we’re left with fallen leaves and quieter evenings, the Big Sky Community Theater invites you to join them for the fall production of “Doublewide, Texas” written by Jessie Jones, Nicholas Hope and Jamie Wooten, and presented at the Warren Miller Performing Arts Center on Nov. 5 and 6. Open to all ages, each production starts at 7 p.m. with tickets available online.

This hilarious comedy centers on a loving group of small town mobile homeowners on the outskirts of Tugaloo, Texas. Fearing that their peaceful life of sagging trailers and weekly yard sales is being infringed upon when the local governance decides to annex their property, the community springs into action to prove they will do anything to keep their way of life intact. With schemes that run from “woman-less beauty pageants,” to formal secession, nothing will keep these larger-than-life characters from their goal.

Kicking off its 14th season, Big Sky Community Theater is also a homespun effort and a labor of love by a small but tight knit crew with a desire to involve as many people as possible. This season’s show brings a smaller cast of 11 local actors to the stage, as well as local musicians Stephanie Kissell and Sarah Mitchell, with many more involved behind the scenes. From veteran performers to others brand new to the theater, the goal is to provide a place for anyone to come and flex their creativity.

Working with a shoestring budget and a schedule designed to accommodate the varied work hours and multiple hats that many of our community wear, BSCT brings a sense of community, purpose and a chance to play (sometimes in heels!) while providing a creative outlet for some of Big Sky’s quieter months.

With help from Big Sky Thrift (and seasonal Halloween stores) for costumes, cooperative labor from cast and crew on set design and build, and props sourced from basements, Facebook asks and random garage sale finds, BSCT truly brings the spirit of cooperation and resourcefulness to the theater.
