On Dec. 16, the Gallatin County 911 dispatch received a call from an ice climbing group at 3:53 p.m. A climber had fallen about 40 feet and sustained a back injury, according to a Dec. 18 press release from the Gallatin County sheriff’s office.
The incident occurred on an ice climbing route called “Zack Attack” and Gallatin County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue, members of the helicopter and valley sections, Hyalite Fire Department and AMR Ambulance responded. The heli team accessed the climber and search and rescue used a short-haul line to bring the patient to a ready ambulance.
“Sheriff Springer would like to thank all agencies which responded to assist, especially Central Copters for their professionalism and timeliness during critical calls such as this one,” the release stated. Sheriff Springer continued to say that he always recommends calling early if faced with a potential emergency and packing extra supplies when in the backcountry.
