It was a busy holiday weekend for Gallatin County Search and Rescue teams. Two Jan. 2 news releases from the Gallatin County Sheriff’s office reported rescues on Friday, Dec. 29 and Saturday, Jan. 30 in the Big Sky area.
On the afternoon of Dec. 29, Gallatin County 911 received a call from the partner of an injured skier. The skier had injured her ankle on a rock and despite the injury, the pair made their way down the trail to meet the Gallatin County Search & Rescue volunteers at the trailhead.
GCSSAR provided first aid and assisted the skier to the pair’s car where they would drive to receive follow-up medical care.
According to the release, Sheriff Dan Springer commended the pair of skiers who communicated the injury and were “well equipped to handle an extended stay in the backcountry if circumstances required it.”
The following day, Dec. 30, GCSSAR responded to a call for two injured snowmobilers in Buck Ridge. Both snowmobilers sustained injuries after crashing in the area.
Thanks to Canyon Adventures, a local snowmobile guide company which operates in the Custer Gallatin National Forest, the injured riders were reached and assisted.
GCSSAR volunteers from Big Sky deployed a snowmobile rescue team up the trail. In collaboration with Canyon Adventures, both snowmobilers were transported to a Big Sky Fire Ambulance and were treated by Big Sky Fire Department personnel.
“Sheriff Dan Springer would like to thank all of the individuals who assisted the injured riders, especially the Canyon Adventures guides, whose quick action was vital in guaranteeing the most positive outcome possible,” the release stated.
