The Montana Department of Transportation announced on Jan. 22 that eastbound traffic along I-90 will be detoured at the Bear Canyon Interchange, or exit 313, to avoid a damaged bridge. Traffic will be detoured starting from exit 312. Bozeman Trail Road is not accessible from I-90, and the interstate underpass on Bozeman Trail is closed to traffic.

On Wednesday, Jan. 21, the overpass bridge was damaged when a commercial vehicle that exceeded the bridge clearance of 13 feet, 3 inches, attempted to pass under the bridge on Bozeman Trail Road, according to a news release from MDT.

“MDT Bridge Engineers have inspected the structure and deemed the closure necessary until repairs can be made or additional information is available,” stated the release. “Debris from the structure continues to fall on Bozeman Trail, so travel under the bridge must be restricted.”

The closure is to ensure public safety and MDT said they will release further details once they become available. For the time being, road closures will be updated on 511mt.net or the MDT road conditions app. The closure is marked with a red triangle with additional details.
