Since 2015 when Bozeman Health opened the Big Sky Regional Medical Center, Kelly Halmes—formerly Reynolds—has worked as a registered nurse, nurse manager and director of nursing. Halmes will now oversee operations as administrator while continuing as director of nursing.
A June 24 Bozeman Health press release celebrated her “dedicated” tenure with BSMC, including her role as interim administrator since the departure of former administrator Chris Darnell in May 2024.
“Living and working in the Big Sky community is one of the most rewarding experiences of my life,” Halmes stated in the release. “This place is filled with incredibly interesting, resourceful, and kind individuals. It’s an honor to serve, provide care and reside in such a remarkable community.”

In her 13-month interim stint, she was “instrumental” in securing BSMC’s designation by state health officials as a Montana Trauma Receiving Facility, according to the release.
Halmes will oversee hospital operations including staffing, planning and service execution at BSMC. She will also represent the hospital to its partners within the Big Sky community, where she has lived with her family for years.
Halmes will also oversee the B2 UrgentCare at Big Sky Resort. Typically open only during ski season, the urgent care facility is now open for its first summer, providing weekend service from Friday to Sunday in alignment with Big Sky Resort hours.
