Big Sky Fire Department firefighter Shane Farmer will spend 30 consecutive hours completing a physical challenge to raise money for the Big Fish Foundation, a Colorado-based nonprofit supporting the mental health and wellbeing of military veterans as they transition back to civilian life.

Farmer will begin the challenge Friday, June 20 at 9 a.m. and continue until Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. The event webpage lists Farmer among 14 competitors slated to compete in the sixth annual fundraiser in Boulder, Colorado.

“Anything I can do to help others will always be at the front of my heart and mind,” Farmer wrote in an email to EBS. “In this case, to give back to those that have protected our freedoms is a unique opportunity that I could not pass up on. Thirty hours is merely a small chunk of time compared to the sacrifice made by our nation’s veterans. Additionally, I feel it’s important to show my children that I am willing to do anything to help others and raise them to do the same.”

As of June 18, Farmer has raised more than $5,500 toward a $20,000 goal, and he encourages the Big Sky community to contribute to his campaign. Money raised by Farmer will contribute to his score, in combination with the results of the physical tests he’ll face.

“Every dollar matters and will help change the lives of those that have protected our freedoms,” Farmer wrote.
