Photojournalist documents father’s self-deportation in days to follow

Samantha Suazo, who graduated from Lone Peak High School in 2022, tossed her cap at Yale University on May 18.
Working on a profile for The Atlantic, Getty Images photojournalist John Moore spent days with Suazo and her family, documenting not only the joy of Suazo’s Ivy League graduation, but the heartbreak of separation as her father, Marvin Suazo, self-deported back to Honduras just days later.
The Suazo family fled violence in Honduras in 2014 and sought asylum in the U.S., eventually landing in Big Sky. Unlike Samantha and her mother, Maribel, Marvin was ineligible for asylum due to a previous deportation, according to reporting by The Atlantic, and he lived as an undocumented immigrant in the U.S. until recent weeks.
The profile documents the Suazo family parting ways with Marvin, his return to Honduras, and Samantha’s visit to her native country after graduation.
