Man dies by suicide at Bozeman Walmart

On Sunday, Aug. 10, at approximately 1:19 p.m., Bozeman Police Officers responded to a report of a man holding a firearm to his head near the north grocery entrance of the Bozeman Walmart. The man was identified in an Aug. 11 press release from Gallatin County Sheriff Dan Springer as 61-year-old Roland Nelson of Bozeman.

Store security assisted in clearing customers from the area and officers spoke with Roland, encouraging him to place the firearm on the ground. Shortly after, Roland shot himself. Medical assistance was called but he was beyond life-saving measures and was declared dead at the scene.

According to an Aug. 11 press release from the City of Bozeman, no officers fired their weapons during this incident, nor were any officers or members of the public injured. The incident remains under investigation by the Bozeman Police Department and the Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office Coroner.

In addition to the Bozeman Police Department, the release expressed gratitude toward the Bozeman Fire Department, American Medical Response, and Walmart staff who assisted during this incident. Walmart will remain closed until further notice from store management.
