BOZEMAN — The Yellowstone Art Museum in Billings will host an exhibition co-curated by Todd Larkin, professor of art history at Montana State University, from April 18 to Aug. 3.
The exhibition, “Northeastern Asia and the Northern Rockies: Treasures from the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Daryl S. Paulson Collection,” will explore the philosophical ties between northeastern Asia and the northern Rockies through objects such as Daoist scholar stones, Confucian painting tools, Buddhist deity sculptures and Asian settlement photographs. Alongside the art and rituals of east Asian migrants working in the northern Rockies from 1850 to 1918, contemporary Asian American artists from the region will also present their work.
The Henry Luce Foundation funded the exhibition with a $120,000 grant to the MSU Alumni Foundation in 2018. Larkin collaborated with Stephen Little, curator of east Asian art the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, to curate the collection and develop the show during a six-year period.
