In 1973, Big Sky Resort welcomed skiers onto its lifts over rocky, snow-covered terrain. One of those four original lifts was the Explorer chairlift, which will be retired on March 30, 2025. After 51 years of service, 125 chairs are going on sale to the public with all proceeds supporting local nonprofits.
The Big Sky Community Housing Trust, Gallatin River Task Force and Wellness in Action will benefit equally from the chair sales. Priced at $1,200 apiece, the chair sale will open on March 20 at 10 a.m. and will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis.
“The sale presents a unique opportunity to own a piece of Big Sky ski history while supporting vital community organizations,” a March 17 Big Sky Resort press release stated.
A 10-person Explorer Gondola will take Explorer’s place and is on schedule to open in December 2025, according to the resort.
“We’re excited to give these chairs a new life while giving back to three critical organizations in our community,” resort President and COO Troy Nedved stated in the release.
