Explorebigsky.com assistant editor Taylor Anderson spoke with Rob Stutz, Montana Democratic candidate for the US House. The interview is part of a series featured online and in the Big Sky Weekly with all candidates in Montana races this year.

Rob Stutz stresses civic engagement through participation and interaction with elected officials. The former chief legal counsel for the Montana Legislature is running for the first time for public office. He has worked in the US Embassies in London and Belgrade, Serbia, and finished law school in Missoula.

Stutz said Wednesday during a phone interview that he supports a Keystone XL Pipeline that’s based out of the Bakken Oil Fields in Montana “because that would decouple the economic benefit and the jobs we’ll have here in Montana from the environmental problems with the Alberta Tar Sands.” He suggested adding value by refining the oil in Billings.

He says his campaign remains independent from special interest or political action committees (PACs).

He also touts a strong view towards responsible conservation, and spoke among four other Democratic candidates on Feb. 12 at a Montana Conservation Voters forum in Bozeman.

Stutz says he puts strong emphasis on protecting both the Montana and United States constitutions, and says “the constitution is a social contract that requires elected officials to work for the people.”
