Drivers should plan for reduced speeds near 191/64 intersection

On Monday, June 24, road work will resume as crews look to wrap up Big Sky’s federal TIGER grant project by the end of the summer.

At Big Sky’s recent Madison-Gallatin Joint County Commission Meeting, engineer Danielle Scharf explained that this summer’s work will be lighter than last.

“Traffic control this season should be much more manageable than last season,” Scharf said at the May 8 meeting. Work along the shoulders of Montana Highway 64 (Lone Mountain Trail) will primarily be completed under two-way traffic. Chip seal and pavement marking will cause some short-term lane closures.

Now, the work begins. On Monday, grading operations will begin near the intersection of U.S. Highway 191 and Highway 64, according to a June 21 email update from Kristine Fife, public relations representative for the project.

“Drivers should plan for reduced speeds, single-lane closures, and delays while grading activities are completed,” the email stated.

Grading work should take approximately two weeks.

In addition, concrete crews will complete ADA ramps along the new bike path—constructed last summer—between Andesite Road and Big Pine Drive. Sections of the path will be closed during construction, but it should not impact vehicle traffic.

In a follow-up email to EBS, public relations manager Sloane Stinson added context to the ADA ramps.

“The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) ramps are the same as ramps found at street corners, which make it easier for wheeled devices to transition from the street to the sidewalk. These ramps will ensure greater access for individuals with disabilities and will also offer benefits for bicyclists, and those pushing strollers and carts,” Stinson wrote.
